The acclaimed director pushes his film-making abilities with this innovative paranormal narrative shot entirely from the perspective of the phantom. The Black Phone
Derrickson's contained scarefest stands strong despite the lack of a sequel. Located in 1978 Denver, a series of child abductions has rendered the local kids frightened. After Finney gets captured by the kidnapper and imprisoned in a dungeon, he anticipates a fatal end. Yet the old telephone mounted nearby repeatedly calls, with eerie communicators giving advice, and the prescient dreams of Gwen, his sister might rescue him. A solid creepfest. October 11th, late evening, the Film4 channel
The Tammy Faye Biopic
In the battle between God and Mammon, it's a knockout win for Mammon in this director's delightfully tacky film adaptation regarding the shamed televangelist and her criminal husband. Andrew Garfield portrays the corrupt Bakker, who states early on, asserting religious justification for riches. The couple set about profiting from the people's spiritual convictions. It's a spectacle of bad interior design, bad makeup and hypocrisy, yet Chastain achieves to depict Tammy Faye with compassion. October 14th, 1.15am, the Film4 channel
