Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by captain Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes made those words in several interviews following England's loss in the second Ashes series versus Australia previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had let his message to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I required," said the England leader.

However, following Crawley scored 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "weak men" observation subsequent to England suffered a loss in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The team subsequently took a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, he said his team had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous tenure in leadership.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a daunting target of 435 runs.

This means, Australia require four wickets on the final day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 advantage with three Tests.

Defeat will extend England's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes series defeat.

This series is set to be decided in just 11 days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," said the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will definitely view it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a formidable team. It was inevitably tough coming here against them. They were the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's performance in the third Test probably answers questions about his immediate future in the side, Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in England's second knock on day four, extending his poor record against the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

However, the opener insisted any suggestion Pope is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is noise externally. There's no discussion of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," he finished.
